The Story
It’s 1933—the night before the big Nuremberg Rally. Everything is set in place when suddenly Adolf Hitler becomes deathly ill. The new Reich will be seen as weak if they pull out now—the show must go on! That’s when Joseph Goebbels, Rudolf Hess, Ernst Röhm, and Leni Riefenstahl conspire to prop up a Hitler impersonator to take the place of their Führer. But at such short notice, their only choice is a gay, Jewish cabaret singer. Comedy ensues.
Development
This is an Anti-Fascist musical.
Admittedly, it started out as just another genre-bending, paradigm-subverting comedy by yours truly. The cast and musicians consisted of what could be termed as the superstars of our extended artist family. My dream team. And yes, it was nerve-wracking to work and costume around symbols of the greatest historical nightmare of modern times.
Then the white-power march at Charlottesville happened, and the President at the time supported it.
This gave us new courage and a purpose. Hitler in the Green Room suddenly didn't feel like the edgy farce we'd started out as. It became political satire.
